Important Notice re: INAC Secure Status Cards

07/29/2009

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that it has been advised that the processing of the new Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) Secure Certificates of Indian Status will resume on weekdays beginning on Wednesday, 5 Seskehkó:wa/August until Friday, 21 Seskehkó:wa/ August.

Afterward, this will continue on a two-day-per-week basis until December. Exact dates/days will be announced later.

The MCK’s Social Development Unit will once again assist INAC in the process, which will take place from 9am to 5pm at the Peacekeepers Station Community Room. There will be a one hour lunch break from 12 noon to 1pm.

Community members are reminded that they will need a valid (current) birth certificate as well as a photo I.D.

For those who have already registered for the new Secure Certificates: If you have received a letter from INAC (signed by Ray Hatfield) giving you the option to return a form – DISREGARD the form, unless you plan to use other forms of identification to cross the border, such as a passport.

If you do not reply to the letter, the new Secure Certificate of Indian Status acceptable for crossing by land into the United States will be sent to you automatically.

Due to the letter’s lack of clarity, INAC has made arrangements to contact anyone who has returned the form to INAC in order to ensure that the person’s intentions are respected.
