Elderly Snow Removal Program a Success
04/07/2009
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke is pleased to announce that the Essential Snow Removal Program for the Elderly and Disabled will continue for the 2009/2010 winter season. Further, with funds specifically allocated in this year’s MCK Budget, it has been determined clients will not be required to pay an administration fee.
The 2008/2009 Essential Snow Removal Program will officially come to an end on April 15, 2009. The total cost to run the program to date is $19,325, which is $7,325 over the $12,000 allocated for the program. There were 62 clients who participated in the Program. Those clients paid a $50 fee to help offset the cost overruns. Any further storms until April 15th would raise the amount of the deficit.
The goal of the Essential Snow Removal Service is to ensure elderly and disabled community members are provided with a pathway to leave their homes to attend medical appointments or for emergency purposes. Despite some complaints of slow service at the beginning of the season, administrators have deemed the program a success.
All clients who currently receive the service will need to reapply in the fall of 2009. Details on the 2009/2010 program will be communicated in the early fall.
