Community Representative appointed to the Kahnawake Justice Commission

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Don Patrick Martin has been appointed as a community representative on the Kahnawake Justice Commission (Commission).
The appointment was passed by consensus and formalized at the duly convened Council Meeting held on Monday, September 23, 2024. Mr. Martins appointment is for a three-year term ending Thursday, September 23, 2027.
The Commission is mandated to provide oversight to Justice Services by monitoring its activities in matters concerning the administration of the Kahnawą:ke Justice System. It is also mandated to ensure that the integrity of the Kahnawą:ke Justice System is protected and defended.
As per section 12 of the Constitution of the Kahnawą:ke Justice Commission, the composition of the Commission will consist of:
- Commissioner of Justice (non-voting);
- one (1) member of a judiciary; and
- two (2) community representatives.
There had been only one (1) community representative appointed to the Commission. The second spot had been vacant following the resignation of Mr. David A. Diabo after his election to Council in July 2024. The Commission has not had a quorum since, and a quorum is required for formal decisions to be made by the Commission.
