Kahnawake Labor Office holding Community Engagement BBQ on Tuesday

08/23/2024

The Kahnawake Labor Office (KLO) is inviting the community to attend the launch of its Community Engagement campaign on Tuesday, August 27th, on the grounds of its offices on the Old Malone Highway. A free lunch of barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs - with all the trimmings - will be served from 11:30am to 2pm.

As announced earlier this month, the KLO is taking a new approach to promote its services and programs, which include Occupational Health & Safety, Certification & Competency, Fair Wages, and Mohawk Self Insurance.

With recent developments regarding several new large-scale projects, including the Multi-Purpose Building, the KLO decided that this is an appropriate time to renew its commitment to improve and ensure the health and safety of Kahnawà:ke’s workforce. While the KLO has existed for several years, it was felt that community engagement should be given very high priority, as a large segment of the population may be unaware or only slightly aware of the important work that has been underway for many years.

“We hope that Kahnawa’kehró:non will stop by to chat, ask questions, make suggestions, or just enjoy burgers and hot dogs,” said KLO Director Jeff Morris. “We have a long history of producing high-quality construction and ironworkers. Over the years there has been a great deal of work to ensure we have jurisdiction over important matters such as worker certification and Mohawk Self Insurance. We must always keep sight of the reasons that building and defending our jurisdiction is so important.”

The entire KLO staff will be on-site to meet, greet, and speak with community members. Along with exchanges of ideas and information, there will be various promotional giveaways, as well as a fun ‘Plinko’ style quiz game where participants will be eligible for a draw to win one of three $50 Shop Kahnawà:ke gift certificates.

“We’re really excited to host this event,” added Morris. “With Labor Day just around the corner highlighting the history of working conditions and occupational safety & health, it’s the perfect time to take on the tasks to best serve the workers and business owners of our community.”

In case of inclement weather, the barbecue event will take place the following day.
