MCK PSAs and Press Releases currently blocked on Facebook
08/10/2023
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Canada′s Online News Act legislation requires digital platforms (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) to facilitate business relationships with news media outlets to provide access to their news through their platform. This has created controversy within the tech world, as companies like Facebook or Google now have to pay media companies to let people share their news and links online.
At this time, Facebook has opted out and decided to remove all news from its platform, to avoid having to pay media companies. The end result - no more news on Facebook. Although this should only apply to news sources that are from media companies, we are at the mercy of how the platform functions, and at this time, it seems our page is being grouped in with other media companies.
Community members may have noticed on their own personal social media that news items from media are no longer visible. The MCK Facebook page has been grouped in this category and, as a result, can no longer provide access for its viewers to press releases and public service announcements from both the past and the future.
The issue is being investigated with the digital platforms, and we hope to have a solution very soon. In the meantime, please refer to the www.kahnawake.com website, the daily mailing list (on Kahnawake.com), and local media for news and information.
The MCK apologizes for this inconvenience.
