Update on Mange Fox on Tekakwitha Island
07/28/2022
Kahnaw:ke Animal Control wishes to update the community concerning a mange fox on Tekakwitha Island.
Animal Control is asking the community not to approach the fox, as it does have mange and parasites that have the potential to be transmitted to humans. Although mites cannot live long on a human, they can cause a rash lasting two to three days.
Given that domestic dogs appear particularly susceptible to contracting mange, we ask that people refrain from bringing their dogs onto Tekakwitha Island until the situation is under control. This is for the safety and well-being of your pets.
Also, please do not feed the fox under any circumstances. Feeding the fox makes it more difficult for Animal Control to trap it.
Animal Controls mediation plans include trapping the fox, treating it, and returning it to his natural habitat.
Animal Control thanks the community for its cooperation. For questions or concerns, please get in touch with Kahnaw:ke Animal Control at 450-632-0635.
