Fish Sampling in the Little Suzanne River
04/11/2022
The Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) would like to inform the community that fish sampling will take place next week in the Little Suzanne River. Non-lethal hoop net traps and minnow traps will be set for two overnight periods beginning the afternoon of Monday, April 18th, with the final check occurring by Friday, April 22nd. Exact sampling dates are weather dependent.
Collaborators from the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Environment Program will be assisting in fish collection, processing, and release. The traps will be deployed for 18-20 hours at a time. Traps will be partially submerged so that in the unlikely event of an air-breathing animal entering the trap, it will have access to air. All fish will be released with the exception of a few small minnows to be kept as specimens.
Please do not disturb the traps or allow pets to come in contact with them. The Red areas on the map below indicate approximate sampling zones. Sampling will be repeated the week of April 25-29.
KEPO staff will be practicing gear deployment in the Recreation Bay near the Oną:ke Paddling Club on Wednesday, April 13th, and Thursday, April 14th, during which they will not be catching fish.
For more information, please contact KEPO at 450-635-0600 or environmentprotection@mck.ca.
