Icebreaker in the area
03/18/2022
The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke is advising the community that icebreaking operations are now underway in the Kahnawà:ke region of the St. Lawrence Seaway.
The icebreaker travels very quickly during its operation, with obvious dangers to anyone on the ice. Kahnawa’kehró:non are being reminded to follow these ice safety tips:
- Do not venture out on the ice.
- The ice becomes more unstable and dangerous (Bay area) as ice begins to quickly melt once ice breaking operations have occurred.
- Ice movement can occur and pose a real danger to anyone in the operational area of these vessels.
- Kahnawa’kehró:non who have left ice-huts or any equipment on the ice are advised to bring them back to shore as soon as possible before operations begins.
The Seaway is scheduled to begin full operation next week.
