Delegation attending Climate Change Conference meet with NDP Leader

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to update the community on some of the events at the 26th Annual United Nations Global Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland, which is being attended by a youth delegation from Kahnawà:ke. The group, comprised of four Kahnawa’kehró:non (Ohontsakéhte Montour, Julie Delisle, Carlee Loft, and Sage Goodleaf), were selected to attend this conference by the Kahnawà:ke Collective Impact Initiative.

Today, our delegates met with NDP Leader, Jagmeet Singh, to discuss several issues, including Nation to Nation relationships, land issues and traditional knowledge in regards to climate change.

“We are so beyond proud of this delegation of youth from Kahnawà:ke that have raised important issues and perspectives to the international climate change conversation,” said Ietsénhaienhs  Jessica Lazare. “We commend them for bringing their voices and advocating for our Mother Earth, and not shying away from asserting the significance of our culture and way of life in the fight against climate change.”

This endeavor was organized by Carlee Loft, in her role as Youth Engagement Coordinator at the Kahnawà:ke Collective Impact and has been made possible thanks to support from Indigenous Climate Action, The Climate Reality Project, and YMCA Quebec.

The conference began on October 31st, and continues through November 12th.
