Dry weather increases risks of grass fires

04/07/2021

The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, in conjunction with the Kahnawake Fire Brigade and Kahnawake Peacekeepers would like to remind all community members about the increased risk of grass fires due to the dry weather.

The risk of grass fires is currently high, and the community is being advised to use caution in an effort to prevent grass fires. These types of fires pose a risk to the health and safety of the community and our first responders. COVID-19 also adds a risk to emergency personnel, as they must needlessly assemble for these types of calls.

If you’re driving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) please be reminded that parts of the engine and exhaust systems are hot enough to ignite dry grass and brush.

Residents are also being reminded that due to the high risk of grass fires in Kahnawà:ke and Tioweró:ton the burning of brush or similar fires are not permitted. However, backyard campfires are allowed, as long as they are done safely, contained in a firepit, and monitored at all times.

Additionally, if you see any suspicious activity or see a grass fire, please contact the Peacekeepers at (450) 632-6505. Starting grass fires is a crime.

For more information on grass fires contact the Kahnawake Fire Brigade at (450) 632-2010 or the Public Safety Division at (450) 632-0635.
