Tekakwitha Island and Bay Restoration Dredging to begin Friday

08/27/2020

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office wishes to inform the community that the in-water works associated with the Tekakwitha Island and Bay restoration project will be starting on Friday, August 28th.

The contractor, RML, and their subcontractor will be mobilizing a movable platform that will complete the work. The aquatic plants above the dredged area will first be cut and collected. Then, a hydraulic pump will be used to pump a sediment/water mix from the dredging area to a dewatering pit. Once dredging is complete, aquatic plant removal will continue in the center of the bay to the outlet into the seaway.

It is anticipated that this work will take approximately six weeks to complete. To expedite this process, dredging operations will also be conducted on Saturdays and Sundays, between 8am and 5pm until the dredging component is complete. Access to the bay will be maintained, but we ask that community members avoid the identified work areas in the water. Environment protection measures will be implemented during the work to prevent the movement of sediment downstream and to limit impacts to fish and other wildlife.

For more information on this or any other aspect of the Tekakwitha Island and Bay restoration project, please contact us at bayproject@mck.ca or 450-635-0600. Maps of the dredging and aquatic plant removal areas can be found on our website at www.kahnawakeenvironment.com or facebook.ca/kahnawakeenvironment.
