Mohawk Chiefs to Discuss Tobacco with Feds
07/02/2008
Chiefs from Kahnawà:ke, Akwesasne, Tyendinaga and Six Nations are meeting today with Federal representatives to discuss the tobacco issue.
This is a follow up to a recent meeting between Grand Chief Michael Ahríhrhon Delisle, Jr. and Minister of Public Safety Stockwell Day, as well as a conference call with chiefs from the four Territories.
“This is an important meeting,” said Chief Delisle. “It’s something that should have happened before Canada made its recent ill-advised announcement on so-called contraband tobacco. However, at least we are sitting and discussing the issue face-to-face. We’re hoping for some positive results.”
Officials from Public Safety Canada, the RCMP, Finance, Canadian Revenue Agency and the Department of Indian Affairs are expected to attend.
