State of Emergency extended
05/19/2020
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that the current State of Emergency was formally extended for a period of thirty (30) days at todays duly-convened Council meeting. The Mohawk Council Resolution was passed by consensus by all eleven (11) Council members present. The passage of this Resolution includes the extension of the Mandate for the Kahnawą:ke COVID-19 Task Force. The original Declaration of State of Emergency was ratified on April 21, 2020. By law, the State of Emergency cannot be declared for an indefinite period and, instead, must be renewed on a monthly basis. The Declaration of State of Emergency was taken to ensure the protection of Kahnawą:kes jurisdiction during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also gives the MCK the ability to make changes to various public safety laws (Kahnawą:ke Emergency Preparedness Law, Sanitary Conditions Law) if required to ensure the next phases of the pandemic are addressed.
