Shingles on Tekakwitha Island in place for Snake Survey
04/17/2020
The Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) would like to inform the community that they are undertaking a Snake Survey on Tekakwitha Island to support efforts to remediate the Recreation Bay.
The survey will be taking place over several weeks, during which time shingles will be in place throughout the island in order to attract snakes. The shingles have been marked and KEPO asks that they not be disturbed in any way.
During the Spring, as temperatures rise, snakes begin emerging from their over-wintering spots (known as hibernacula) where they gather in large numbers. Surveying the population at this time will allow us to determine the location of the hibernacula before any works take place.
Please contact the Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office at environment.protection@mck.ca for more information.
