Report on Quebec public inquiry on Indigenous Relations (Viens Commission) available for viewing

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that the Summary Report on the public inquiry commission into the relations between Indigenous Peoples and certain public services in Quebec: listening, reconciliation and progress (often referred to as the Viens Commission) can be viewed on the MCK’s website.

It was requested that the document be made available so that Kahnawa’kehró:non can consult it. According a letter received this week from Inquiry President Jacques Viens, it is hoped that the report’s recommendations “will mark the starting point of a path to reconciliation and towards the improvement of relations between Indigenous peoples and targeted public services.”

“The Commission confirmed that Quebec has quite a way to go to change its culture in terms of how it services the Indigenous population,” said Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. “The inquiry resulted in a great many recommendations to help address these issues. It’s a good idea for people to actually read the Summary Report, as it provides a checklist or scorecard to hold the government accountable to take action, and not just make nice statements about reconciliation.”
