Major Sports Complex project nears completion
10/04/2019
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is pleased to announce that one of the last components of a multi-year project has been installed, bringing the Kahnawà:ke Sports Complex closer to its intended role as a truly multi-dimensional sports and recreational facility.
Earlier this week tennis nets were installed in preparation for Spring 2020. The new tennis court was co-sponsored by Onkwata’karitáhtshera, Kahnawà:ke’s One Health & Social Services Agency, who provided a very generous donation.
“Our partnership with Onkwata’karitáhtshera has been very fruitful for the community,” said Mackenzie Whyte, the General Manager of Recreation.
“We would like to acknowledge their support in helping us make Kahnawà:ke a healthier place through investment in recreational facilities. In addition to the Tennis Court, they previously funded the Fitness Park and the Lacrosse Rebound Wall. They have contributed towards the Sesame Street Revitalization and Mini Putt, which will be built this fall for completion this coming spring. Finally, they, along with the Kateri Memorial Foundation, will be funding two Park Pavilion shade structures – one in Matty’s Park and one at Orville Standup Park - which will begin construction in the upcoming weeks.”
The following have been installed at the Sports Complex since 2018:
- New tennis court
- new seating inside the arena
- new compressor for the arena ice
- Blue Jays Field of Dreams regulation-size baseball field with stands
- Two soccer fields, which are also used for field lacrosse
- New splash pad
- Newly fully functional paved parking lot
- Special crosswalks from the splash pad/playground area to the arena
A grand opening will be held in Spring 2020, with various demonstrations of all activities for the entire community to come out and try.
