KEPO attending Climate Strike event on Friday

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that the Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office will be attending the ‘Climate Strike’ march/event taking place in Montreal on Friday afternoon.

“We’ll be attending to offer our support to the youth who are leading this momentous movement,” said Lynn Jacobs, Director of Environment Protection. “As youth activist Greta Thunberg stated in her speech at the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York earlier this week, ‘Right here, right now is where we draw the line. The world is waking up. And change is coming, whether we like it or not.’

As part of this community’s contribution to the global climate action movement the Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office coordinated an effort to plant more than 650 trees last week, and wishes to thank all of the volunteers, contributors and supporters who participated.

“Every individual has a role to play on a daily basis to mitigate climate change,” Ms. Jacobs added. “Every action has an impact, no matter how small or large your action may be.”

Kahnawà:ke Shakotiia’takéhnhas Community Services will also be participating in Friday’s event.

“I would like to wish all the supporters for this Friday’s ‘Climate Strike’ march much success,” said Ratsénhaienhs Clinton Phillips, who holds the Environment Portfolio for the MCK. “My hope is that this event creates momentum and, perhaps, we can have a march locally at some point in the near future. As climate change affects the globe we all need to be part of the solution and stop being part of the problem.”
