Phase I excavation of Lot 106 completed
08/29/2019
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Phase I excavation has been completed on Lot 106 to remove transit pipe fragments.
Phase I consists of the immediate remediation of occupied sites and sites where construction is underway. Though trucks with clean soil will be in the area, no more excavation and removal will take place until a plan for Phase II is complete.
“We wanted to complete Phase I as quickly and safely as possible,” said Commissioner of Public Safety Lloyd Phillips. “Now that the excavation is done we have some follow-up to do from the Community Information Session held this past Tuesday, address a few outstanding issues and create a plan for Phase II.”
The Kahnawà:ke Labor Office conducted inspections yesterday to address concerns on sites mentioned at the information session and will be producing a report. Part of Phase II will include the assessment of material at the ‘Snow Dump’ (where the materials being removed from Lot 106 are being temporarily stored) and safe removal of any transit pipe off the Territory.
