Mohawk-Irish Language Scholarship application deadline next Tuesday

05/15/2019

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise community members who may be interested in applying for the Mohawk-Irish Language Scholarship that they MUST apply by Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 12pm noon.

As announced last month, the scholarship was created to facilitate a Mohawk Scholar from Kahnawà:ke to attend an Irish-language course in the Irish community of An Cheathrú Rua each year, beginning this year.

Please note that the three-week course will take place from Friday, May 31st to Wednesday, June 19th. The scholarship includes transportation, tuition and living expenses (food and accommodations).

“We realize that it’s short notice, but details needed to be confirmed and finalized before we could formally open the application process,” said Ietsénhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer, who is the Lead on the Heritage Portfolio for the MCK. “This is an incredible opportunity, especially since we share great pride in the survival – and revival – of our Indigenous languages and cultures, despite being surrounded by outside influences.”

Applicants must be at least 20 years of age and on the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Registry. The course would suit absolute beginners, and there are cultural activities and trips organized as part of the course. Additionally, course credits can be transferred to Canadian universities if desired.

Please send a letter of intent and a reference to Ietsénhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer at 450-632-7500 or via email at kahsennenhawe.sky-deer@mck.ca. These can also be dropped off at the MCK main office reception. The selection will be announced next Wednesday, May 22nd.
