Kahnawake Residency Law one step closer to passage
05/03/2019
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission wishes to advise the community that the revised Definition of Onkwehón:we Ancestry included in the draft Kahnawà:ke Residency Law was accepted at last evening’s meeting.
The meeting had been requested by the Technical Drafting Committee after it became clear that changes made to the Definition in a previous meeting were problematic. The proposal was made to have the Definition revert to its original wording to avoid issues of inconsistency. After a brief presentation and explanation of the rationale, consensus was reached after a twenty minute discussion/question period.
With this task completed, the draft Kahnawà:ke Residency Law will be posted in the upcoming days for a final two-week period before being brought forth for Final Reading and formal passage by Chief & Council. It is important to note that, since this law is being created via the Community Decision Making Process (‘CDMP’) Urgent Process, it will be required to be re-submitted into the regular CDMP within a year of enactment.
