Kanawaki Lease Renewal Project Sub-Committee established

01/25/2019

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to announce that a Kanawaki Lease Renewal Project Sub-Committee has been formally established. The Sub-Committee represents private interest holders who own land at the Kanawaki Golf Club. The group met for the first time as a formal group on Tuesday, January 22nd.

The Sub-Committee was created as a result of the consultation process, which showed that the private interest holders wanted to be directly involved in the process. Those who wished to participate volunteered at a previous meeting held last November. The Sub-Committee will be responsible to gather the views and concerns of the interest holders, and communicate these with the MCK, Kanawaki and Indigenous Services Canada, as appropriate.

“This meeting was important, as it sets the stage for the work to consult and share information among all concerned with the ongoing discussions and negotiations,” said Ratsénhaienhs Carl Horn, who handles the Kanawaki file on behalf of Chief & Council and helps facilitate the meetings. “The main objective is to come to consensus on behalf of the private interest holders on a fair amount of rent, and other issues related to the lease.”

The Sub-Committee consists of private interest holders Claire Meloche, Clint Goodleaf, Suzanne Lahache, Mike Diabo, Joann Patton and Bernard Meloche, along with, MCK Director of Lands Melanie Gilbert, MCK Technician Lanny Jacobs and Ratsénhaienhs Horn.

It is important to note that the Sub-Committee members are not deemed legal representatives of the individual interest holders.
