CIF Awarding $314,395 for New Community Socio-Economic Initiatives

10/24/2018

Forwarded on behalf of the Community Initiatives FundThe Community Initiatives Fund of Kahnawà:ke (CIF) is pleased to announce that the selection and evaluation of applications for the inaugural round of funding, is complete. The eighteen (18) successful initiatives, representing fourteen (14) different organizations, will be publicly announced on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at 7pm at the Kateri Hall in Kahnawà:ke.
In May of 2018, the CIF put out a call for the first round of applications, part of a year-long campaign to disseminate $500,000, approximately one-sixth of the total amount of the funds issued by sponsors Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke and Tewatohnhi’saktha.

The CIF welcomes Kahnawà:ke Shakotiia’takehnhas Community Services and Onkwata’karitáhtshera as financial contributors, supporting six (6) of the initiatives that target community health priorities.

“We received applications from a good cross-section of the community,” said CIF coordinator Charleen Schurman. “The majority received funds, and for the few that didn’t, we will stay in touch and work with them for future rounds.”

Twenty-nine (29) submissions were received by the July 6, 2018, deadline – two (2) were subsequently withdrawn, and 11 from a single organization were combined. The CIF intends to launch another campaign in January 2019.

“While the Oversight and Review Committee would ideally like to distribute all funds allocated for this period, the nature and quality of applications are key,” said Schurman. “We are organizing a vigorous promotional campaign to provide better information about the CIF, and to encourage ideal applications.”

At the October 25th gathering, applicants will sign financial agreements and receive funds by cheque, while networking with peers and celebrating with refreshments.
