MCK meets with federal officials regarding Environmental Strategic Assessment

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that a meeting is taking place regarding the Regional Strategic Environmental Assessment (‘Strategic Assessment’).

Representatives each from various Canadian government agencies, including Indigenous Affairs;  the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency; Transport Canada; and the Department of Fisheries & Oceans are participating.

Ietsénhaienhs Christine Zachary-Deom (who holds the Consultation Portfolio), Ratsénhaienhs Clinton Phillips (Environment Portfolio) and several technicians are representing the MCK.

The agenda includes discussion on the importance of the Strategic Assessment for cumulative effects of Various Port Projects; the Duty to Consult; the Ocean Protection Plan; and a discussion on a Collaborative Approach.

“The agenda and participation reflects the importance of this meeting,” stated Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton, who provided the opening remarks. “The government is beginning to better understand that consultation is not just a word. The fact that several Directors and Regional Directors are here today is a positive step, but there’s a long way to go.”
