Residency Law Working Group seeks Focus Group members
04/23/2018
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to announce that the Working Group responsible for the proposed Kahnawà:ke Residency Law is seeking community members who are interested in participating in a focus group. Participants will be asked to assist the technical drafting team with the concepts for criteria for portions of the proposed Law.
The Mandate was given by the community in Onerahtohkó:wa/May 2017 to begin drafting a Residency Law. Though consensus was reached, the community directed there be better clarity for the Eligibility Criteria for Non-Member Residency.
The drafting team has created a draft of the proposed law but has identified a need to get some community perspectives on the Eligibility criteria.
“The focus group will be a useful exercise for considering criteria to propose to the community,” said Trina C. Diabo, the MCK Technician on the file.
“We are scheduling two separate groups in order to get a solid cross-section of the community,” she added. “To be clear, this is not the Community Decision Making Process but, rather, we’re looking at this as a tool to prepare a better draft to help when the time to make the decision comes.”
The proposed dates for the sessions are set for Thursday, May 17 from 6 to 8pm and Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 6 to 8pm. Interested persons must be on the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Registry and should contact Ms. Diabo at 450-632-7500 or by email at trinac.diabo@mck.ca.
