MCK & JFK Quarry Reach Interim Agreement
02/07/2008
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawá:ke announced that it has entered into an interim agreement with JFK Quarry, on behalf of the Community. Previous to today, there had been no agreement between the two parties. JFK Quarry had taken over the operation of the quarry from Roxboro Excavation in April 2007.
The previous agreement between the MCK and Roxboro Excavation was not continued because JFK Quarry wished to operate under different terms than Roxboro Excavation, which was a joint venture between a Community member and a non-native company. JFK is completely owned by two Community members. The parties then proceeded to reach an interim agreement, which shall be in effect until March 31, 2009. During this period, the parties intend to reach a long term agreement for the operation of the JFK Quarry.
In the future, any other quarry wishing to operate in Kahnawá:ke shall require proper Community consultation and an agreement with the MCK.
