Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawake (Membership) Law Second Hearing recap - next meeting set for April 3rd
03/21/2018
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) would like to inform the community that the Second Hearing phase began last evening for the proposed amendments to the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law (formerly known as the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law).
There were five items on the agenda. The first four (Definition of Great Grandparent, Preamble, Purpose, and Jurisdiction) all passed by full consensus. The Definition of a Great Grandparent, which was discussed for five full meetings in the First Hearing phase, was passed after approximately 40 minutes of discussion and debate with the addition of one word for further clarification.
The final agenda item included the remainder of the Definitions. Consensus was reached on eight (8) before the session ended at 8:30pm. Six (6) passed with no changes. Minor additions were made to the remaining two for clarity. Two items were deferred – these will be on the agenda for the second meeting in this Second hearing phase.
It should be noted that all items passed by full consensus, with no objections or abstentions.
The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, 3 Onerahtókha/April at 6:00pm at the Golden Age Club. The full agenda will be announced shortly. Copies of the Draft Law, as well as Records of Discussion from previous Hearings are available online at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com.
