MCK approves Community Initiatives Fund plan
02/28/2018
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to announce that Chief & Council have unanimously approved the Administrative Plan Text for the Community Initiatives Fund (CIF) at this past Monday’s Council Meeting.
Tewatohnhi’saktha Board of Directors had signed a Resolution approving the Administrative Plan Text on 21, Enníska/February 2018.
The CIF will initially contain $3 million derived from the Canadian exchange from the sale of Continent 8 shares in 2016. The creation of the CIF is based on the notion of improving socio-economic conditions within the Territory through the development of positive, sustainable initiatives. The four overarching categories of funding are: Education & Learning; Language & Culture; Health & Wellness; and Social Economy.
The funding process will be proposal-based, in which community members, organizations and/or other eligible entities will submit an application for a new initiative that will increase the quality of life for the community as a collective.
The CIF will be jointly administered by the MCK and Tewatohnhi’saktha. The MCK has appointed Financial Manager Karlie Onerahtókha Marquis as its representative on the Oversight & Review Committee, while Tewatohnhi’saktha has appointed Virginia Standup as its representative. At least three other Community Committee Members will be recruited and appointed by 31, Enniskó:wa/March 2018.
Currently, work on the project is focusing on formalizing the application process and committee functions, as well as creating a website – all of which need to be established prior to the official launch of the CIF.
The above-mentioned Administrative Plan Text will serve as a solid foundation to ensure the monies in the CIF are managed soundly and allow the Sponsors (the MCK and Tewatohnhi’saktha) to support projects/initiatives that will have a significant impact.
