MCK reminds community of Zero Tolerance on any loose dogs
10/16/2017
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to remind the community that a ‘zero tolerance’ policy is now in effect for any loose dogs.
The zero tolerance was announced at the Special Community Meeting on Loose Dogs held last week. That meeting was called in response to a vicious attack by two dogs on a 13-year-old boy in September in which the victim was hospitalized with serious injuries.
“We’re certain that this may upset some community members who have so-called ‘friendly’ dogs who have run free for their entire lives, but the community is speaking quite clearly in this matter,” said Ratsénhaienhs Bobby Patton, who holds the Public Safety Portfolio on behalf of the MCK. “The fact is that any dog is capable of biting, regardless of type or size.”
“The Peacekeepers are prepared to assist Animal Protection in this matter,” he added. “Any dog that is loose will be picked up, if we are advised or if a complaint comes in. As stated in the meeting last week, there will be no ifs ands or buts.”
In the meantime, steps are being taken to explore amending the current law to give it more strength, if the community deems it necessary.
Anyone who wishes to report a loose dog should contact Animal Protection. During regular working hours, callers can reach the office at 450-632-0635. On weekends and in the evening, please call 514-232-3307. There is an Animal Protection officer available from 8 am to 10 pm every day. In case of an emergency situation, or if one does not have the above numbers on hand, please contact the Kahnawake Peacekeepers at 450-632-6505.
