Indigenous Policing events tomorrow in Montreal and Kahnawà:ke

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that a one-day Indigenous Policing workshop entitled “Reconciliation: Indigenous Policing Models in a Pluralistic Society” is being held in Montreal tomorrow (Thursday). The event will be followed by a tour of Kahnawà:ke, a visit to the Peacekeeper station and dinner.

“This is the third annual event specific to civilian oversight of policing in Indigenous communities,” said Commissioner of Public Safety Ron Skye, who is also the Chairperson of the First Nations Police Governance Council and a Director on the Canadian Association of Police Governance – who is organizing this annual National Conference. “The entire day will be spent discussing issues that impact Indigenous police, their boards and communities. Those involved in First Nations policing services from across the country will be attending.”

The dinner will be hosted by the Kahnawà:ke Peacekeepers and will feature speakers offering their recollections of policing in Kahnawà:ke.

“Policing in Kahnawà:ke has a long history, and I’m proud to be part of it,” said Ietsénhaienhs Gina Deer, who holds the Policing Portfolio for the MCK. “On behalf of the community, I’m pleased to welcome of the participants who will be visiting Kahnawà:ke and attending the dinner.”
