Proposed Residency Law information session next Tuesday

05/11/2017

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to remind Kahnawa’kehrò:non that an information session on the proposed Residency Law is scheduled for next Tuesday, 16 Onerahtohkó:wa/May at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

The meeting is the first of three consecutive meetings planned to address the proposal to remove the sections pertaining to residency from the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law, with the intent to make it simpler to address and administer that law.

“With the results from the recent survey clearly in favor of creating a separate Residency Law, the community should have the confidence to move forward,” said Ietsénhaienhs Rhonda Kirby, who is responsible for the proposed Residency law on behalf of the MCK. “This is complementary to the consensus reached through the Community Decision Making Process for the proposed amendments to the Membership Law, where the participants agreed to defer the sections that pertain to Residency until the community decides whether or not to have a separate law.”

“There are a number of compelling reasons to do this,” she concluded. “We hope as many people as possible come forth on Tuesday to get the proper information in order to make an informed decision the following week. The community knows where it stands – our job is to make sure that any legislation properly reflects the community’s wishes.”

The information meeting will start at 7pm sharp. A meeting to request a community mandate to move forward with the law is scheduled for Tuesday, May 23rd.   Another meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 30th – should a mandate be given, this meeting will be the first to begin the process of developing the draft law.
