Special Notice – Do NOT dump snow in creeks or wetlands

03/16/2017

Following this week’s big snow storm the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s Environment Protection Office is reminding community members to refrain from dumping snow in any local creeks or wetlands.

Dumping snow in natural areas causes harm to aquatic and wetland ecosystems. Snow from roadways often contains high levels of salt, sediment and, occasionally, heavy metals and other contaminants that can impair ecosystem dynamics and ultimately harm animal and plant life.

To keep our ecosystems healthy, it is vitally important NOT to dump snow cleared from roadways into our waterways.
