Homeowners beware of flooding conditions
03/01/2017
The Public Safety Office of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to caution homeowners to be prepared for potential flood-like situations as a result of recent warm and rainy weather conditions.
Homeowners are urged to verify their sump pump is in proper working condition to prevent flooding their basement. The following tips will help reduce the possibility of a flood:
- Ensure you have a secondary sump pump that will turn on if the main pump fails. - Ensure at least one pump is battery operated in case of a power failure; - Clear eaves troughs and down spouts of debris and attach a pipe to direct the water away from the foundation; and - Ensure the grading slope around your home is clear of snow or debris so the water can properly drain away from your home.
Proper maintenance and operating conditions of pump equipment is the responsibility of the owner. The MCK or the Kahnawake Fire Brigade do NOT provide pump rentals or services to pump water from basements.
For more information on flood prevention or for information on pump rentals, contact the PSU at (450) 632-0635.
