Who Can Live in Kahnawake

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that a survey to gauge the opinions of Kahnawa′kehró:non regarding residency in Kahnawà:ke will be conducted at the Services Complex lobby on Monday, December 19th from 9am to 1pm.
 
All Kahnawa′kehró:non are encouraged to participate in this survey, which is being done in preparation for the upcoming first phase of Community/Stakeholder Consultations on the proposed Kahnawà:ke Residency Law which has been tabled to go through the Community Decision Making Process.
 
“Because of the Descheneaux Decision, the federal government is scheduled to debate proposed amendments to the Indian Act in February 2017 that could see even more Status Indians created by federal legislation,” said Ietsénhaienhs Rhonda Kirby. “We have concerns that the changes could result in an influx of newly-minted ‘Federal Mohawks’ demanding services, funding and , of course, the benefits of residency within the Territory. That’s the reason we feel a sense of urgency in moving on this matter.”
 
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) received two letters requesting the creation of a Kahnawà:ke Residency Law on 22, Kenténha/October 2014 and a third letter from Ietsénhaienhs Kirby on 28, Kenténha/October 2016. A formal announcement from the KLCC is forthcoming.
