Common land to be leased for parking

09/13/2016

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehrò:non that two (2) acres of common land will be leased to community member Stanley Myiow. The land will be used as an auxiliary parking lot for his business, Poker Palace. The lease amounts cannot be disclosed publicly at this time.

The decision was unanimously supported by Chief & Council at yesterday’s Council meeting.

The common land is adjacent to the St. Lawrence Seaway under Hydro Line 2A at SLS 28, in the area known as Clay Mountains. These lands were previously designated for commercial/business purposes.

The parking lot will be constructed by Mr. Myiow for his business on Highway 132. The lease is for one (1) year, with options for both parties to continue or discontinue the arrangement.

The land must be returned to its current state when the lease ends. The MCK will conduct an environmental assessment to determine the current quality of the land before the lease is signed and any construction takes place.

“Business people have inquired about the SLS lots in the past,” said Ratsénhaienhs Clinton Phillips, who holds the Lands portfolio. “However, those requests required infrastructure, which isn’t feasible at this time. This project is fairly simple and straightforward – the lot will not be paved over, so it can easily be returned to its original state by Mr. Myiow upon completion of the lease – which is actually part of the agreement.”
