06/10/2016
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is mourning the loss of Eugene (Nuge) Montour, who passed away last night after a lengthy illness.
He was a former Council Chief who was first elected in 1980, serving four consecutive terms until 1988. He then ran successfully again in 2000 and served another two terms until 2004.
MCK Executive Director Alana Goodleaf-Rice acknowledged Mr. Montour for his important role in the creation of the Housing Program in the early 1980’s. In later years he was a member of the Traditional Government working group, among other key files. After his tenure at the MCK ended, ‘Nuge’ remained active in community affairs and, as recently as 2011 was selected to the Kahnawà:ke Trades Qualifications Commission as an Alternate Commissioner.
The MCK wishes to offer its deepest condolences to his family, former colleagues and many friends. Funeral arrangements are pending.
