Adoption at the top of agenda for Membership Law Hearing tomorrow
03/07/2016
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to remind Kahnawa’kehró:non that the ninth meeting in the current ‘First Hearing’ phase for proposed amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law will be held tomorrow (Tuesday) evening at the Golden Age Club.
The agenda, which was announced last week, includes the following:
- Continuing discussion on Section 14.7, which reads: “A child who has no Kanien’keháka or Indigenous lineage adopted by a Kanien’keháka of Kahnawà:ke parent(s) after the enactment of this law on November 10, 2003 is not eligible to be recognized as a Kanien’keháka of Kahnawà:ke or be an Approved Kahnawà:ke Resident”
- The Definition of ‘Great Grand Parent’ will be revisited
- Section 15 ‘Application Process/Approved Kahnawà:ke Residents’
- Section 16 Entitlements of Kanien’keháka of Kahnawà:ke’
- Relevant/related Definitions will be addressed as they arise
“I hope we’ll get a good turnout to decide on these important clauses of the proposed amendments,” said Membership Portfolio Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “The Adoption section is almost complete, and we still need to agree on a definition for ‘great grandparent’ – which is paramount to the law – so careful discussion and deliberation is essential to make sure they meet the entire community’s expectations. So it will be an important night for people to participate.”
The meeting will take place from 6pm to 8:30pm tomorrow (Tuesday, March 8).
