Consensus reached on parts of Section 12 of proposed amendments to Kahnawake Membership Law
01/27/2016
The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission would like to inform the community that consensus was reached on the first three clauses of Section 12 of the proposed amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law at last evening’s Hearing.
The two clauses were passed with only minor changes or additions for clarity. In the case of the third clause (12.3), there was a long discussion and debate on the merits of a proposal for a change that would allow for a child born of a mother who is a Member and a non-Indigenous father to apply for Membership before the age of eighteen (18). The motion did not pass after a clear consensus was reached to keep the clause as originally presented, which has no relevance to the sex of the parent, and that the child may only apply once he/she reaches the age of 18.
Approximately 25 community members participated in the meeting, which ended at the scheduled 8:30pm.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 9 Enníska/February 2016 at the Golden Age Club. The remainder of Section 12 will be addressed, starting with 12.4. The official agenda will be announced shortly.
