Grand Chief to meet with Premier Couillard this morning

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK)  wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton will be meeting with Québec Premier Philippe Couillard this morning in Quebec City.

While the two have spoken in recent weeks, this will be their first face-to-face meeting. Among the topics on the agenda: issues regarding the return of Highway 30 Lands and the proposed (and related) Bill 85; taxation; gaming; and the relationship between Kahnawà:ke and the Province.

“We have high expectations for this meeting,” said Grand Chief Norton. “We are hoping it is the beginning of a renewal of a relationship based on nation-to-nation principles.”

Intergovernmental Relations Portfolio Chief Rhonda Kirby and Chief Political Advisor Winona Polson-Lahache will accompany Grand Chief Norton. Pierre Moreau, who holds dual roles as Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for the Montérégie, and Minister for Native Affairs Geoffrey Kelley will also be in attendance.
