01/25/2016
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is reminding the community that the First Hearing continues tomorrow (Tuesday) evening for proposed amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law.
There are three sections to be addressed on the agenda. These include:
- Section 12: Application Process/Recognition
- Section 13: Instatement and Reinstatement (former Section 10.3 moves to this section)
- Section 14: Adopted Children. Major redraft of this section, with adopted children being treated in a similar manner to other First Nations/Onkwehonwe children
- Additionally, any relevant/related Definitions (Section 4) from this meeting will be addressed as they arise.
“The topics to be addressed tomorrow night are what we consider to be the ‘heart of the law,’ as they deal with who is eligible to be on the Kanien’keháka of Kahnawà:ke Registry,” said Membership Portfolio Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “We expect that there will be intense discussion as this ultimately affects our future generations.”
“We’re encouraging as many community members to attend, if their schedules permit,” she concluded. “This is a very important meeting.
The meeting, which is the fifth meeting in the First Hearing phase of the Community Decision Making Process, will take place at the Karonhianónhnha School Gymnasium. It is scheduled to begin at 6pm sharp and will run until 8:30pm, unless consensus is reached beforehand.
