Local traffic issues to be addressed
11/30/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise community members, especially those living on Route 207, that actions will be taken in light of on-going traffic issues on the segment of that road between the Mercier Bridge and the Highway 30 intersection.
Chief & Council met today with representatives from the Kahnawake Peacekeepers, Public Safety, Legal Services and MCK technicians to discuss the current situation and come up with viable solutions to the problem of increasing vehicular traffic, including heavy vehicles, and speeding offences.
The MCK has announced that the Peacekeepers will immediately increase its presence on the 207 and its entrance points to limit intake. Additionally, a meeting will be organized by the various entities in the very near future to address the residents’ concerns directly.
“The traffic problems on roads like the 207 – and let’s not forget the Old Chateauguay Road – are a direct result of increased volume heading towards the Mercier Bridge in the morning and heading back to the surrounding communities in the afternoon and evening,” said Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. “With major infrastructure projects planned around most major bridges and highways in the Montreal area, we need to plan ahead to avoid even more traffic and safety issues on our Territory.”
In the meantime, other more long-term solutions will be discussed. Meetings between the MCK and the Quebec transport ministry are also in works.
