AFNQL Chiefs meet to strategize on possible actions regarding federal election

09/29/2015

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that a special Assembly of First Nations of Quebec & Labrador chiefs meeting will be held in Kahnawà:ke tomorrow to strategize on potential actions being considered in regard to the upcoming Federal election.

Opening remarks will be provided by Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. The agenda will include discussions on the context of the October 19th elections; the various party platforms; and a strategic discussion on potential actions to be taken to raise consciousness of First Nations issues leading up to the election.

“This may be one of the most important federal elections in many years,” said Grand Chief Norton. “The Harper government has been no friend to us, but there is no guarantee at this point that any of the other parties are taking Native issues as seriously as they need to. We want to send a strong message to Canadians that their leaders need to make this a priority and not just pay lip service to our concerns.”

Approximately twenty (20) chiefs from across Quebec are expected to attend the meeting.
