MCK supports Communal Organic Farming initiative on Highway 30 lands

08/05/2015

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that Chief & Council are in full support of the Communal Organic Farming initiative that is taking place on the Highway 30 lands that will be officially returned the Territory at a future date.

“While the land in question is still technically under provincial control, it has been part of Kahnawa:ke for hundreds of years,” said Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. “This initiative is a positive step in reminding the surrounding communities that the land is ours and that we intend to use it. The fact that organic farming brings us back to our roots is another positive development.”

“We will keep the lines of communication open in order to ensure all parties remain on the same page,” he added. “The message should be clear: it’s our land regardless of the roadblocks that have been put in our way by the surrounding municipalities,” he said, in reference to the lawsuit that the mayors have initiated in Quebec court.

The initiative began in late spring under the auspices of members of the Longhouse on Route 207. The MCK is committed to working with the Longhouses and are hopeful of a meeting in the near future.
