Peacekeepers demand correction for Eastern Door editorial

05/22/2015

The Kahnawake Peacekeepers wish to inform the community that they are demanding a correction for a major error included in an editorial published in today’s Eastern Door newspaper.

In his editorial, Steve Bonspiel writes that, “The Peacekeepers, according to a press release, signed for the man to be returned to Kahnawake before his next court appearance, yet there they were telling him (Denis Thauvette) to leave that day, three days before his next court date.”

“First, the Peacekeepers never issued a release on this subject,” said Chief Peacekeeper Dwayne Zacharie. “The Peacekeepers never signed for or had a hand in having Mr. Thauvette released early. To be clear, the Peacekeepers were objecting to his release. Finally, and most important, Mr. Thauvette was actually released without the knowledge of our department.”

“The issues that we have to deal with are difficult enough without someone complicating matters by engaging in irresponsible journalism,” he added. “He failed to check facts and never contacted the department for any information. We have attempted to contact Mr. Bonspiel and are demanding a full correction in this matter.”
