Illegal dumping at the Recycling and Transfer Depot
04/13/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke and Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office would like to remind the community that it is illegal to dump garbage at the Recycling Depot and the Transfer Depot. Recent incidents of quantities of garbage being left at both locations have prompted management to begin to review surveillance on the premises and notify the Kahnawake Peacekeepers to issue fines.
Fines for illegal dumping are as follows: - $50 for the first offence; - $100 for the second offence; and - depending on the severity, offenders could be charged with illegal dumping and issued a fine up to $2,000 and be required to make a court appearance.
Illegal dumping has a negative impact on resources, due to the cost of removing and the result of having lands staff clean waste rather than carry out their normal recycling and waste management services.
The KEPO is urging community members to utilize the household pickup garbage service for their waste.
If you are unsure of what is recyclable and what is accepted at the Transfer Depot, please consult the Environment page at www.kahnawake.com or call (450) 635-0600.
