Consensus reached on Amendments to Mohawk Council of Kahnawake Election Law
01/22/2015
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that consensus was reached last evening on proposed Amendments to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke Election Law. The community members present were asked to discuss four specific questions and approve the recommendations that had been made.
“The changes that were presented for discussion were, for the most part, for better clarity,” said Trina C. Diabo, the MCK technician who is heading the amendment process. “However, one recommendation made by the MCK’s legal team was more significant. It was felt that the time limit to render a decision from the time an appeal was received was too short. After some discussion, the recommendation to allow a more time was unanimously accepted.”
The changes will be incorporated into the Final Draft, which is expected to be completed in short order. Once the new draft is completed it will be posted for Community Feedback.
“While deadlines are fast approaching, we can say that there is a possibility that the amended law could be in place in time for this summer’s MCK election,” Ms. Diabo added. “There are still a couple of steps in the Community Decision Making Process that have to be completed, though.”
Last night’s meeting was attended by six community members. Due to final consensus being reached, the follow-up meeting scheduled for next week has been cancelled. Last night’s Record of Discussion will be posted at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions
upon completion.
