Seigneury of Sault St. Louis consultations to get underway tomorrow (Tuesday)
12/01/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to remind the community that consultations on the Seigneury of Sault St. Louis land grievance will officially begin tomorrow (Tuesday) with a Community Consultation Session to be held at the Golden Age Club.
“We need to hear exactly what the community wants regarding lands,” said Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. “That’s what the main focus of this meeting is about.”
“This is an important time in our history,” he added. “We’ve been at the table with Canada for over nine years and there is actually some light at the end of this 300-year tunnel.”
“We will share as much information as we can so that Kahnawa’kehró:non have all the information they need to engage in discussions within this consultation process,” said Grand Chief Delisle. “We are creating space for a dialogue, and we need Kahnawa’kehró:non to participate. We must move forward together as a community on this issue.”
All Mohawks of Kahnawà:ke are welcome to attend the meeting, which is scheduled for 6:30 to 9pm.
Other public forums will be scheduled in the New Year. Additionally, Kahnawa’kehró:non are being asked to sign up for individual, family or group sessions.
In 1994 the MCK and Canada engaged in a joint process to clarify and resolve the long-standing grievance. In 2003, Kahnawà:ke accepted a formal offer from Canada to negotiate a settlement. Talks continue today.
