MCK issues statement on Membership Law rally today
10/27/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform community members that Chief & Council are aware of a rally in support of the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law that is planned for 3:30pm this afternoon.
While the MCK is not organizing the event, it reminds Kahnawa’kehró:non that anyone wishing to participate must be guided by respectful behavior.
“As we are all well aware, people have the right to demonstrate,” stated Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. “We are confident that the clear majority of the people support the law, as we do. However, we must insist that this rally, or any other meeting or event, remains peaceful and respectful.”
Several Council Chiefs indicated today that they would be participating in the rally.
“We have been made aware that there may be a plan to deliver letters to some of the people who are in contravention of the law,” he said. “The MCK’s position is that it prefers that any notices in this regard be sent by registered letter rather than in person.”
