Grand Chief responds to accusations of racism by National Post columnist
09/29/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. has responded to a column in the September 22nd National Post entitled “The one place in Canada where racism is still tolerated: native reserves.”
“The columnist, Jonathan Kay, has obviously never set foot in Kahnawà:ke,” said Grand Chief Delisle. “He has no interest in acknowledging the fact that we have the right to protect our language, culture and way of life from the overwhelming crush of the North American society that surrounds us.”
“Kahnawa’kehró:non who have seen the column are upset,” he added. “To label the community as racist is deplorable and ignorant. Our response attempts to set the record straight. At this time it has yet to be published by the National Post, but we wanted the community to know that we have taken action in this matter.”
The response, in the form of a letter to the editor, was sent to the National Post on Thursday, September 25th. The letter can be viewed on kahnawake.com.
