Landfill Operations Report presented to Chief and Council
05/23/2014
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that a report was presented to Chief and Council at a duly convened meeting on 20, Onerahtohkó:wa/May 2014, following an internal investigation into actions and procedures related to landfill operations. The report recommends the complete restructuring of the current operations to ensure that only acceptable landfill material enters the Community. The report and recommendations were unanimously accepted by all twelve (12) Chiefs.
While implementation of the report′s recommendations will take considerable time, interim arrangements for limited operations for the 2014 construction season will be made so that private landowners can obtain materials required solely for personal and immediate residential development. Intake of applications for private landowners is expected to begin by mid-June.
Please note the interim arrangement is not intended for the development of large-scale projects. Such activity will remain suspended until the complete restructuring of the landfill operation is complete.
The MCK suspended all landfill operations within the Territory on 5, Tsothóhrha/December 2013 to address allegations of possible unacceptable materials, concerns about landfill spilling over onto other properties and other compliance issues.
Landfill operations are administered through the MCK’s Landfill Office to ensure compliance with regulations in regard to the quality of soil, possession of proper authorization permits and other matters of due diligence. Landfilling includes both residential and ‘large scale’ operations.
