Follow-up re Gas Tax Class Action Settlement payments

03/31/2014

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK)  has been made aware of a press release from the First Nations Human Resources Development Commission of Quebec (FNHRDCQ) regarding the payments from the Class Action Settlement on Fuel Tax Paid on Reserve announced in 2013.

Please note that this is NOT an MCK initiative.

The press release states that, "All claims have now been reviewed and the approval letters and indemnities were mailed out on February 28, 2014. Therefore, members of our communities receiving EI benefits who have received a compensation regarding fuel tax will have to report it to EI but will not be penalized since the amount is considered to be a bonus and not a salary. However, they will have to call 1-800-206-7218 to explain the source of the amount."

Further, the release states, "Regarding claimants who have already reported without mentioning the amount received, they will also have to declare the amount in their next reporting or by calling the number listed above."

Further information can be obtained by contacting Wanda Lafontaine at 450-638-4513, wlafontaine@cdrhpnq.qc.ca, or by visiting the local Employment Center located on the second floor of the Kahnawake Business Complex (Tewa building). A copy of the FNHRDCQ press release can be viewed on page two of the PDF of this document.
